Vision 2027 is a strategic blueprint for Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences, encapsulating our commitment to becoming the preeminent leader in health professions education, research, clinical excellence, community service, diversity and innovation. We aim to enhance academic quality, advance groundbreaking research, deliver exceptional patient care, nurture community engagement and innovation and champion diversity.

By aligning these goals with our foundational values of accountability, collaboration, honesty, inclusiveness and wellness, we are positioned to navigate the changing landscape of health care education and practice.

This strategic direction is a road map for institutional growth and transformation and a promise to our students, faculty, staff, alumni and the communities we serve.

Education Vision Statement 2027

DMU will serve as a national leader in health professions education with a vision and focus on training the health care leaders and workforce of the future.

  1. Support high-quality academics and expansion of programming to adapt to a changing health care environment.
  2. Champion innovative and interprofessional opportunities to advance lifelong learning and collaboration.
  3. Enhance students’ knowledge, skills, behaviors, attitudes, critical thinking and well-being.
  4. Sustain a culture of professionalism, emphasizing the university’s values of accountability, collaboration, honesty, inclusiveness and wellness.
  5. Foster a dynamic and actively engaging learning environment that prioritizes continuous quality improvement.
  6. Provide program curricula to promote culturally responsive care and prepare students for a diverse health care environment.

Research Vision Statement 2027

DMU will shape forward-thinking scholars who collaboratively discover, develop and implement new insights, driving groundbreaking research and transformative education.

  1. Broaden and diversify investment sources to strategically enhance research infrastructure, ensuring DMU’s capacity for innovation and scholarly excellence.
  2. Promote an institutional culture that strategically supports and allocates time for scholarly activity.
  3. Grow strategic research partnerships to elevate DMU’s scientific reputation and drive impactful interdisciplinary collaborations.
  4. Develop, articulate and support a well-defined university research agenda that prioritizes DMU’s core strengths.

Clinic Vision Statement 2027

DMU will deliver and advocate for high-quality patient care and innovative educational experiences that improve the health and well-being of the populations we serve.

  1. Elevate the Des Moines University Clinic as an academic multispecialty clinic committed to translational research and the training of culturally responsive health care providers.
  2. Promote the brand of DMU Clinic as a leader in clinical care, providing expertise and evidence-based practice to the communities we serve.
  3. Expand clinical services through strategic collaborative relationships to meet community needs, enhance student educational opportunities and deliver and advocate for high-quality health care.
  4. Advance outcomes-focused patient care models designed to enhance efficiencies, improve outcomes and deliver value-based patient care.
  5. Engage in interprofessional collaborative care to broaden an understanding of the expertise of other health professions and the value of interdisciplinary practice to patients.

Service and Policy Vision Statement 2027

DMU will champion community service and collaborate with key stakeholders on policy issues to support the well-being of our community.

  1. Promote preventive care and improve health and well-being through innovative education and highly competent service to our community.
  2. Strengthen partnerships with organizations whose work aligns with our mission “to improve lives in our global community.”
  3. Focus health and education policy advocacy efforts on local, state and federal issues to support the well-being of our community and the professional lives of our students and graduates.
  4. Embrace inclusiveness and welcome diverse perspectives through community service by compassionate students, faculty and staff.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Vision Statement 2027

DMU will expand its role as a national leader in supporting and educating students, faculty and staff to build competencies in diversity, equity and inclusion.

  1. Amplify the institution’s commitment to providing culturally competent patient-centered care of all individuals through the application of cultural humility.
  2. Embrace learning opportunities and professional development focused on a culture of inclusiveness by valuing diverse perspectives, centering health equity, reducing health disparities and delivering patient-centered care.
  3. Integrate structural competencies into all facets of student education, empowering our students to identify and help alleviate health inequalities across our diverse society.
