(Des Moines, IA) – Gilbert Ramirez, Dr.P.H., has been named dean of the College of Health Sciences at Des Moines University. Dr. Ramirez joined the University in January 2004 as director of the Division of Health Management and associate dean of the College of Health Sciences. He was named interim dean in September.
Prior to joining Des Moines University, Dr. Ramirez was associate professor and chair of the Department of Leadership Studies and Human Sciences at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas. He earned a doctoral degree in public health from the University of Texas – Houston Health Science Center and a master of public health degree from the University of Hawaii at Honolulu. He also served in the U.S. Army from 1969 through 1989.

The College of Health Sciences is a microcosm of health care today representing clinical and allied health, and population and administrative health disciplines.” Dr. Ramirez said upon accepting his new appointment, “We have a unique opportunity to demonstrate multi- and inter-disciplinary teamwork toward the improvement of our nation’s health and health care system. We will do this by taking a lead role in the application of evidence-based methods both in terms of preparing our students for future practice, and in our practice as academicians.”
