(Des Moines, IA) – Rear Admiral Kenneth P. Moritsugu, M.D., M.P.H., Deputy U.S. Surgeon General, will be the featured speaker at Des Moines University’s 105th Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 28, 2005, at the Iowa Events Center-Hy-Vee Hall, Des Moines.
The commencement exercises will honor 289 graduates of Des Moines University. The College of Osteopathic Medicine will award the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree to 187 graduates. The College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery will award the Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (D.P.M.) degree to 38 graduates. The College of Health Sciences will award degrees to 70 graduates in four programs — Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T), Postprofessional Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.), Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) and Master of Health Care Administration (M.H.A.).
Rear Admiral Kenneth P. Moritsugu, M.D., M.P.H., is Deputy Surgeon General of the U.S. Public Health Service. He serves as the principal assistant and advisor to the Surgeon General. A career officer in the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service, Admiral Moritsugu served as an Assistant Surgeon General beginning with Surgeon General C. Everett Koop in 1988. He began his career in the Public Health Service in 1968 and completed three tours of duty while in medical school.
Admiral Moritsugu was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. He received a bachelor’s degree with honors in classical languages from the University of Hawaii. He earned a medical degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine and an M.P.H. degree in Health Administration and Planning from the University of California–Berkeley.
