(Des Moines, IA) – If current medical and health care research interests you, plan to attend the third annual Des Moines University Student Research Symposium on April 17.
Des Moines University will host the public and students from area colleges and universities for the symposium from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Olsen Medical Education Center, 3200 Grand Avenue.
The symposium is sponsored by DMU’s Oncology Club and the Student Osteopathic Medical Association and is designed to emphasize the importance of medical research, promote education and advance the field of osteopathic medicine.
Organizing student Rudy Tedja said, “We believe a venue like this brings awareness to students about the importance and availability of research.”
Forty presentations will be given on topics such as physical therapy, biology, biochemistry, microbiology and cancer. Students from Drake University, University of Northern Iowa, Iowa State, Central College, Simpson College and Grand View College were invited to present as well. DMU students hope attendance from other institutions fosters an environment of camaraderie within the Iowa research field.
The keynote speaker, John C. Licciardone, D.O., M.S., M.B.A., will present “Opportunities for Osteopathic Research.” Dr. Licciardone is the director of clinical research for the Osteopathic Research Center at the University of North Texas Health Science Center-Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is also the editor of “Osteopathic Medicine and Primary Care,” a medical journal.
“We are excited that our community is able to attract such prestigious medical professionals to show us all the opportunities there are in the osteopathic research.” Tedja said.
