Farmers’ market time!!!

We hear time and again from students that one of their fave. things to do in Des Moines is visit the farmers’ market downtown on Saturday mornings. With fresh, locally grown fruits and veggies, homemade salsa, jams, jellies and pies, farm-raised fresh meat, Iowa’s famous Maytag cheese and wine from Iowa wineries for sale, who can blame them? There really is nothing better than walking around outdoors browsing locally-grown foods, hands full of fresh flowers and hot breakfast.

The market makes for a wonderful breakfast or lunch with hot coffee, delicious pastries, egg burritos, kettle corn, egg rolls, crepes, pizza, smoked meats, freshly baked bread and many other options.

Ethnic options available include Afghan, African, Asian, Mexican, Italian, El Salvadorean, Dutch and Indian foods. At the market you can also shop for necklaces, pottery, garden art, purses, clothing, birdhouses, woodcrafts and more.

Live bands and solo musicians are usually sprinkled amongst the vendors and free activities vary for the kids each week.

Your whole family will have a good time at the market, whether your family includes children in strollers or a dog on a leash. Everyone is welcome.

The Market begins THIS Saturday, May 10!!! It runs every Saturday, 7 a.m. – noon, until October or November. Cya there!
