Students took a break from studying last week to participate in D.O. Day on Capitol Hill. The event is sponsored by the American Osteopathic Association and the Student Osteopathic Medical Association. Every year, students from across the country gather in Washington, D.C., to talk about issues that affect medical students and practicing physicians and meet with their Congressmen. This year 10 second- and third-year DMU D.O. students attended. A total of 800 students and doctors were at the event.
The key issues were:
- Increasing residency options for graduate medical education
- Increasing the physician workforce, specifically primary care
- Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) – part of the Medicare reimbursement formula
This year Congress members Allyson Schwartz (D-PA) Michael Burgess (R-TX) spoke in addition to the AOA President Larry A. Wickless, D.O., and President-elect Karen J. Nichols, D.O.
