Professional background
I received a B.A. in biology from Bellarmine College in Louisville, KY, and a D.O. degree from Des Moines University. I completed a family practice internship at Mount Clemens General Hospital in Mount Clemens, MI, and a residency in rural family practice at the University of Minnesota. Currently I am a family practice physician at the Henry Ford Health System in Chesterfield, MI.
Favorite part of my job
I enjoy the diversity family medicine offers. I am one of a few (probably crazy) people who still does nursing home visits, rounds on their patients in the hospital and work extra in local urgent care facilities. By interacting with a variety of people it keeps my skills current and provides great cases.
Why I stay involved with DMU
I enjoy the opportunity to interact with classes from varying years. Altruistically, I am on the board to help repay a debt to the school that offered me numerous opportunities. The students and prior alumni provide such enthusiasm and history – it gives me the motivation to continue serving the University.
Advice to those just starting out in the profession
Listen to those who surround you, friends, staff, patients and partners. One begins to lose themselves if it is always about you. Best practical pieces of advice I received from a seasoned pediatrician: “Never trust your brain; write as much down as possible.” This pediatrician would write on the side of his notes certain key events in family lives, deaths, births, weddings and then discuss with the patient in a later visit. Families enjoy the attention to detail.
