This Saturday some of our students & staff are helping out with a really cool initiative called Reach Out & Read Iowa. It’s a local branch of the nat’l “Reach Out & Read” program that provides books for medical professionals to give to children, up to 5 years old, who might otherwise not have much encouragement to read. They focus on low-income families and help educate families on the importance of reading. The program also collects slightly used children’s books to have in waiting rooms and to give to older siblings to continue the environment of literacy.
So anyway, this Saturday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Borders in West Des Moines, you’ll find the DMU Mobile Clinic on site as the dropoff spot for book donations. At 11, students in our Pediatrics Club will provide a storytime. Noon-2 p.m. they’ll show kids what’s in a doctor’s bag and answer questions. They’ll be giving out free first aid kids, while they last AND folks that donate can enter a drawing for a gift basket.
Stop by Border’s & buy some books, drop them off at the mobile clinic out front (you’ll see it – it’s bright green!) and help some kids! You can even print and checkout with this voucher and it’ll direct a portion of your purchase to Reach Out & Read so you can buy yourself some books on Saturday and still help the program!
