Family friendly fests

With warmer weather ahead, now is the time to get outdoors before summer sets in and the rising temps are unbearable. Des Moines offers many fun kid-friendly events throughout the spring and summer, but I thought I would give you a heads up on a few events that are happening this weekend that would be perfect for the pint-sized people in your life.

HyVee Kids Fishing Derby

One fish, two fish, red fish- you fish! Grab your pole and head to Water Works Park this Saturday, May 14 from 8-1 p.m. to join in the fishy fun at Hy-Vee’s 10th Annual Kids Fishing Derby. Kids can experience the joys of reeling in a big one, and if they catch a tagged fish they win a prize of their choice! Fish cleaning stations are available for those who wish to take home the fish. There is no registration fee and fishing licenses are not required to participate in the event. Only children under the age of 15 are allowed to fish at Water Works Park on the day of the Derby. All children must be accompanied by a adult. This event benefits Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa.

CelebrAsian

The Iowa Asian Alliance (IAA) is proud to partner with thirteen Asian American community associations to bring you CelebrAsian this Saturday. This daylong festival located on the State Capitol grounds is perfect for the entire family and celebrates both cultural traditions and contemporary contributions of Asians in Iowa. Have fun tasting new foods, learning the art of origami and listening to traditional and contemporary Asian American entertainers.

Living History Farms Family Weekend

This weekend is Family Weekend at Living History Farms with a slew of fam-friendly events on both Saturday and Sunday. Tour the Farm sites in the morning on Saturday, and spend the afternoon in the town of Walnut Hill from 1 and 4 p.m. with the sights and sounds of a small town fair! Enjoy Victorian entertainment including music, a melodrama, old-fashioned carnival games, the 1875 traveling museum of curiosities and pony rides. Sunday activities are a 1870s-rules baseball game at 2:00 p.m. with free refreshments during the game.
