It’s spring break for many students at Des Moines University, which makes it a great week for enjoying arts, entertainment and local events – in other words, much-deserved breaks from textbooks, lectures, labs and studying. You can relish all three this Friday, March 23, at the Des Moines Art Center’s HUE, a special installment themed around the color aquamarine.
Haven’t been to the art center? You’re missing out! Located at 4700 Grand Avenue, an easy walk from the DMU campus, the center is a gorgeous facility with an impressive collection of paintings, sculpture (inside and around the grounds), mixed media and much more. While there’s a fee to attend HUE (see below), admission to the art center is free. It has a lovely cafe and fun gift shop, too, and often offers classes, movies and other events.
Back to HUE: When you enter the art center, you’ll see the lobby transformed by light and color as you view selections from the permanent art collections projected on a larger-than-life scale. HUE is all about celebrating color in art and everyday life – a wonderful visual treat as we anticipate the coming spring.
Relax to the sounds of DJ Touchnice, enjoy light bites by Luna Bistro + Catering and a special HUE cocktail, and take a short tour of current exhibition, “Miguel Angel Rios: Walkabout.” According to the art center’s website, this New York- and Mexico City-based artist “has been creating haunting and poetic works in video and mixed media. ‘Walkabout’ presents a selection of five video and multimedia installations along with paintings and works on paper that demonstrate his unique relationship to the South American and Mexican landscapes.”
Admission to HUE is $15 at the door, which includes one complimentary cocktail, light bites and entertainment; a cash bar will be available. Colorful attire encouraged, so break out of your scrubs, white coats, sweatpants and get creative!
