DMU concluded another successful year of raising money for the Glanton Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships to high-achieving students, in all University programs, who are under-represented in health care. In the past year, donors generously gave $242,264 to the campaign, which culminated with 430 individuals attending the annual Glanton Scholarship Dinner on October 4.
What a great way to market Des Moines University to our community, alumni and friends. One of the highlights from the dinner was listening to Ebonie Vincent, D.P.M.’15, as she shared her story with our audience.
“I am truly humbled and thankful for the opportunities provided for me through the Glanton Scholarship Fund,” she said. “I do, however, realize that there is a great deal of responsibility that comes with such an honor. I realize that the mission of the Glanton Scholarship is to promote diversity in the health sciences and to train future practitioners who will play a pivotal role in bridging the gap in our current health disparities.
“I thank you on behalf of each and every one of us as students and want you to know that your contributions will not be in vain,” Ebonie continued. “Know that each life we touch is in part because of you, through your giving and support in any and every way. Thank you.”
Hearing from our students reminds us of the significant, important and lasting difference our donors make to our students and to the patients, populations and communities they’ll go on to serve.
Also at this year’s Glanton Scholarship Dinner, we honored Connie Wimer, founder and chair of Business Publications Corporation, whose family of publications includes the Des Moines Business Record. She was the first woman to chair the Des Moines Chamber Federation as well as the first woman to chair the National Alliance of Area Business Publications. She is the only woman to receive the Alliance’s Lewis M. Conn Award for outstanding contributions to the business publications industry and was the first woman elected to the Greater Des Moines Committee’s Business Hall of Fame.
Connie has created a number of popular annual events in central Iowa, including Women of Influence and Forty Under 40, that recognize women and younger people who contribute to the community. She has received many other awards, including the YWCA Woman of Achievement, the Des Moines Chamber’s Small Business Person of the Year and Variety Club’s Humanitarian Award.
