Please mark your calendars for December 5th and plan on attending Des Moines University Cultural Competency Series kick off. The main objectives for DMU’s Cultural Competency Series are to provide DMU faculty, staff and students with the opportunities to learn different skill sets and engage in meaningful dialogues about the importance of cultural competency as it relates to health care. The DMU Cultural Competency Series will include several noon hour workshops, films, book clubs, guest speakers, panels, celebrations, events and programs.
Next Monday, Tim Wise will be lecturing on the topic of “Racial Health Disparities- A Closer Look”. It is important for health care professionals to be able to effectively work and serve in cross-cultural situations, and cultural competency is one of the main ingredients in working together to close the disparities in health care.
At DMU, we hope to continue to come together as students, faculty and staff and discuss and learn about health concerns without cultural differences hindering the conversation, rather enhancing the conversation. Health care providers that are respectful of and responsive to the health beliefs, practices and cultural and linguistic needs of diverse patients can help produce positive health outcomes and benefit all communities.
