Fall means many things in Iowa: cooler days and nights, the start of a new school year, and the broad beautiful spectrum of colors from the surrounding trees and landscape. But here at Des Moines University it also means many requests for assistance with various back-to-school events. These events not only offer a much needed service to our community, but a great learning experience for our students.
Our biggest event of the year will take place on Saturday, July 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. This is our annual ‘Jumpstart’ physicals event and is held in partnership with the Polk County Health Department. We hope to make this year’s event even bigger that last and surpass the number of kids seen, which was around 2,000! Because of this we need all the help we can get.
Also, since RAGBRAI is making an overnight stop in Des Moines this year, July 23 is going to turn downtown Des Moines and Waterworks Park into giant party places. DMU needs students to sign up to perform basic first aid for anyone that may require it.
There are also other events coming up including: Albia, Iowa physicals, DMU Day at the Iowa State Fair, Evelyn Davis back to school carnival physicals and more. We need volunteers for all!
Along with students, we need providers. Are you an alumni provider who lives in the Des Moines area? Are you a local provider that loves to volunteer his or her time? Are you a student who knows a provider that would be great at helping out at some of our events? Please let us know!
Providers can be any D.O., M.D., or PA who currently practices and has his or her own malpractice insurance coverage. Provider volunteers can receive a list of upcoming events and sign up to help out through Melissa Wilder, community relations manager. Sign up for any or all that you’d like to participate in. An email with all information and details for the day will be sent to you the week of the event and all supplies are provided for you.
