Marc B. Hahn, D.O.’84, in July became the 14th president and chief executive officer of the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences (KCUMB).
Hahn, 54, served as executive vice president for academic and medical affairs, provost and dean of the KCUMB College of Osteopathic Medicine since October 2012. He has led the university in making significant changes in curriculum delivery, impact on student debt and sustainability.
Hahn’s vision of a more sustainable campus resulted in the university’s integrating tablet technology into its curriculum for all programs. KCUMB students are being issued iPad tablets in lieu of many textbooks, hand-outs and paper examinations. To assist students with their long-term debt load, Hahn also worked with university leaders to lower tuition for the 2013-2014 academic year.
Prior to joining KCUMB, Hahn served as senior vice president of health affairs and dean of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, ME, and a professor of anesthesiology. From 2001 to 2009, he served as senior vice president for health affairs at the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth and dean of the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine.
After graduating from Syracuse University and then DMU, Hahn served 12 years in the U.S. Army, during which he trained in anesthesiology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. He completed a fellowship in pain management at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, and later became chief of pain management at Walter Reed. He eventually served as chief of the pain medicine and palliative care division at Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine.
The anesthesiologist for presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, Hahn has held many special appointments, including medical school accreditation inspector for the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation and member of the Institute of Medicine’s Planning Committee for Graduate Medical Education.
Hahn is the current chair of the Board of Deans for the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM). He was recently recognized by AACOM for his leadership as the association’s inaugural chair of the Joining Forces Advisory Group.
Board-certified in anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology and the American Osteopathic Board of Anesthesiology, Hahn also holds sub-specialty board certifications in pain medicine by the American Board of Anesthesiology and the American Board of Pain Medicine.
