It’s not every day you have the opportunity to meet a surfer dude/doctor or dive into deep discussions about global health issues, but today you can do both at DMU.

First, DMU’s Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) today is hosting a campus visit and noon-hour talk by Norman Vinn, D.O., who became the 117th president of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) on July 20. In his presentation, which is free, open to the public and set to begin at noon in the Student Education Center (SEC) Auditorium, he will seek to inspire and promote medical students to be active in their roles as physicians and in shaping the future of health care. This surfer-doctor does house calls.

Dr. Vinn may have some good stories to share, too: He is founder of Housecall Doctors Medical Group Inc., a home care network that provides on-site clinical services to more than 1,000 homebound elderly in Southern California. He’s also president of the Residentialist Group Inc., of Laguna Hills, CA, a management group specializing in the development and operation of house call programs. On top of all that, he’s an avid surfer who enjoys writing parody songs and corny jokes, and a D.O. who loves going on house calls.

Then tonight from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Room 101 of the Munroe Building is the 2013-2014 academic year’s first session of the Global Health Learning Collaborative (GHLC), an educational, discussion-based seminar regarding key concepts and principles of global health. These free sessions are sponsored by DMU’s Global Health Student Club, global health department, master of public health degree program, the Heartland Global Health Consortium and DuPont Pioneer.

Join the DMU community today for these stimulating conversations!
