DMU students pursue opportunities for global service and experiential learning through the University and on their own. Daniel Cole, Phyllis Huang and Geraldine Delos Santos, members of the College of Osteopathic Medicine Class of 2016, are examples of the latter: This summer, they participated in a four-week program in Quito, Ecuador, through Child Family Health International, a non-governmental organization that provides community-based global health education programs for health science students. Huang shadowed clinicians in pediatrics and labor and delivery; Delos Santos observed a gynecology clinic, abdominal surgery and hematology/oncology; and Cole shadowed in hospitals and clinics. “I gained insight into some of the similarities and differences that exist in the medical systems of the United States and Ecuador,” he says.
