Plundo completed his doctorate of osteopathy in 1979 at Des Moines University (DMU). He went on to complete an internship in Youngstown, OH, and is a board-certified fellow by the American Board of Osteopathic Family Physicians. He later earned a master of public management (MPM) degree from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA, in 2001. He is a member of the American Osteopathic Association, the American College of Physician Executives and the American Medical Directors Association.

Plundo practiced in Greensburg, PA, for 21 years before relocating to Chicago, IL, where he became the chief medical officer of Midwest Physician Group, the teaching faculty of Chicago’s College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM). He continued to practice medicine in Illinois with an emphasis on geriatrics and spent six years as a vice president of medical affairs (VPMA) for several hospitals in Illinois and one in California. 

Recently, Plundo became the divisional VPMA for Genesis HealthCare, the largest nursing home chain in the United States. In this position, he is the chief clinician in the west overseeing 56 skilled facilities in eight states. His primary role is to develop an organization of physicians and physician extenders, physician assistants and nurse practitioners, who wish to practice long-term care medicine. 

Plundo and his wife, Eileen, reside in Sacramento, CA. They have three sons, Jonathan, an Army Captain and West Point graduate and a veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars; Gregory, a sports management executive in Las Vegas, NV; and Nicholas, a soon-to-be 2014 DMU COM graduate. Dr. Plundo enjoys sports and traveling. 

Plundo was elected to represent DMU’s COM on the Alumni Association Board of Directors at the December 2013 meeting and will serve a three-year term effective January 1, 2014.
