The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) announced Robert Orenstein, D.O.’87, as its new editor in chief. An associate professor of medicine and chair of the division of infectious diseases at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Orenstein began his position with the AOA in January 2014.
As editor in chief, Orenstein carries out the AOA’s strategic agenda toward the advancement of osteopathic medical research as he directs the editorial content of The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association (JAOA) and chairs the JAOA editorial advisory board. He provides critical leadership for the future of the journal, incorporating his experience at a world-renowned research institution and robust career as an infectious diseases investigator, on behalf of one of the fastest-growing segments of health care professionals in the nation. Over the past 25 years, the number of D.O.s has grown more than 200 percent. With more than 50 percent of D.O.s in active practice in one of the primary care areas of medicine, Orenstein’s role in advancing osteopathic medical research is key to ensuring D.O.s continue to meet the nation’s rapidly growing health care needs by advancing their medical education, including through the study of clinical journals.
“My goal is to advance the scholarly mission of our profession by seeking out those who create or translate new knowledge as it relates to osteopathic medicine,” Orenstein says. “By sharing my expertise in education, patient care and clinical research, I hope to infuse new possibilities and innovation as the JAOA aims to provide scholarly information to both D.O.s and M.D.s.”
A fellow of both the American College of Physicians and the Infectious Diseases Society of America, Orenstein is board-certified in internal medicine and infectious diseases. He has served as a peer reviewer for numerous medical journals, co-editor of the textbook Fundamentals of Global HIV Medicine and section editor of the Mayo Clinic Family Health Book. He also serves as a section editor for the JAOA’s evidence-based clinical reviews.
Orenstein resides in Paradise Valley, AZ, with his wife, Amy Foxx-Orenstein, D.O.’87, a gastroenterologist and associate professor at Mayo, and their daughter, Aliya.
