Des Moines University is sponsoring a national conference, “Advancing Rural Primary Care,” that will explore the important role of physician assistants in the changing world of health care. DMU is one of six regional physician assistant programs sponsoring the conference.
The conference will be hosted by the University of Nebraska Medical Center at the Hilton Omaha Hotel in Omaha, Nebraska, September 11-12. It is tailored specifically for administrators, health care leaders, academicians, policy makers, physicians and PAs.
“The number of health care providers in rural America continues to decline,” said Jolene Kelly, chair and program director of DMU’s Physician Assistant program. “This conference is an effort to address some of the issues of rural medicine practice by bringing together practitioners and policy makers in an effort to improve health care in rural America.”
Kelly served on the planning committee and helped bring in speakers to discuss important health care topics, including:
- Unique challenges of rural primary care
- Quality improvement strategies in rural health care delivery
- The maximal utilization of PAs in team-based care
- Building and sustaining rural primary care using PAs
- A federal perspective on key issues facing rural PAs
