The perfect match

The Office of Clinical Affairs is proud to report that the DO Class of 2014 had a residency match rate of 100 percent. This is the first-time (in over six years) that there has been a 100 percent match rate.

As positions in graduate medical education get more competitive, it is imperative that students have the best academic and clinical preparation in order to secure these positions. Of the 223 graduates, 59% entered a primary care specialty (which includes: Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, General Pediatrics and OB/GYN). In addition, we had 13 enter surgery (or surgical sub-specialties including: Orthopedics and Urology). Other specialties matched included: Anesthesia, Child Neurology, Emergency Medicine, Diagnostic Radiology, Med/Peds, Neurology, Pathology and Psychiatry. Geographically, 17% of the graduates stayed in Iowa for their residency training followed by 10% in Michigan, 8% in Ohio and Wisconsin, 7% in Illinois and 5% in Minnesota. Other states matched include: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Washington D.C., Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Maine, Missouri, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, Utah and Washington. Sixty-seven percent of the graduates matched in an ACGME residency, while twenty-nine percent matched in an AOA residency and 4 percent matched in the military match.

Clinical Affairs is always looking for additional clinical preceptors and rotations for our students. We have increased our number of year-long sites and slots by 30 percent since last year with the addition of several new sites and existing sites taking additional students. Within the State of Iowa, we have added: Mahaska Regional Medical Center and St. Anthony’s – Carroll. In addition, Allen Hospital – Unity Point, Genesis Medical Center – Davenport, Mercy Medical Center – Des Moines and Unity Point – Des Moines have all increased their year-long slots (with Mercy Medical Center – Des Moines going from 22 to 33). We are also proud to announce new year-long rotation sites in Florida (Larkin Community Hospital in South Miami), Illinois (Riverside Medica Center in Kankakee) and Missouri (Mercy Hospital in Joplin).

During the end of their third year and beginning of their fourth year of school, students are required to take the COMLEX Level-2 CE examination which is part of their medical licensing exam requirement. Our students have done very well on this exam and its individual components (being higher than the national mean for the past 5 years – see below).
