Dr. Schirner retired from civil service with the U.S. Army on Sept. 20, 2014. He served the Army for 35 years, 25 on active duty and 10 as a civilian. He was the director of medical education at the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center in Fort Hood, TX, for the last 15 years of his career.
