More than 20 DMU physical therapy and podiatric medical students and clinicians staffed eight tables to treat participants in the IMT Des Moines Marathon and half-marathon on Oct. 19. The students addressed runners’ post-event concerns and conducted hands-on treatment to help with their recovery. They also screened runners for specific concerns they had regarding injury or prevention.
The more than 200 runners the students helped included one runner who limped onto one of the tables and got up walking normally after he was treated.
“He was no longer concerned about the five-hour drive that he had to make that afternoon after running the marathon,” says DMU physical therapist Shane McClinton, D.P.T.’07, M.S.P.T.’01, OCS, FAAOMPT, CSCS. “Having been involved in this event for over 10 years, I feel that DMU had its best presence yet.”
