Cindy Lin, D.P.M.’16, was voted the 2015 College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Student of the Year by her classmates and CPMS faculty. As part of the award, Lin receives a $500 scholarship, has her name inscribed on a plaque in the office of the CPMS dean and will be the nominee for the National Podiatric Student of the Year award.
A dedicated member of the College and the podiatric profession, Lin devotes her time to making Des Moines University a leader at the forefront of medicine and service. She has held or currently holds presidency positions for the D.P.M. Class of 2016, ACFAOM Student Chapter, SNPMA, DMU Choir, Student Programming Board and the Conservation and Sustainability Committee. Through these experiences, Lin has helped organize and facilitate meetings, events, conversations and hands-on activities that benefit students university-wide. She also sits on the IPMSA executive committee, Multicultural Affairs Student Advisory Committee, Deans Leadership Council, CPMS Strategic Planning Committee and Council of Presidents to affect policy change and advocate on behalf of students to the faculty and administration at DMU.
Lin has helped coordinate numerous volunteer events, such as the Katie Miller Young Adult Cancer Conference and the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes, where she organized a team of students, faculty and staff to raise money for type I diabetes research. She helps the uninsured and people of low socioeconomic status by volunteering with Homeless Camp Outreach, the Margaret Cramer Free Clinic, I’ll Make Me a World in Iowa and Creative Visions Sunday Dinners. Showing commitment to her studies, she is the recipient of both the CPMS Merit Scholarship and the American Podiatric Medical Association Educational Foundation Scholarship.
The CPMS Student of the Year award is presented annually to a third-year student. Other worthy nominees were Nicholas Powers and Lauren Wurster. Lin accepted the award at the April IPMSA Student Government Meeting.
