Des Moines University Continuing Medical Education has implemented an online reporting system for physicians who precept osteopathic medical students. The new system, which launched January 1, replaces the previous method of submitting preceptor hours through student evaluations. The online system makes it easier for physicians to report preceptor hours and earn CME credit, improves the accuracy of preceptor data and enhances reporting capabilities. Hours can be quickly entered by the physician, clinical coordinator or nurse. No additional action is required for preceptor hours earned prior to 2016. The DMU CME office compiles the hours semi-annually for the period of January-June and July-December. DOs receive the extra benefit of automatic reporting to the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). Submitted hours are reported on the physician’s behalf every six months and are eligible for a maximum 60 AOA Category 1-B credits, which can be utilized to meet the 120-hour, 3-year requirements for licensing purposes. MDs precepting DMU medical students meet the requirements for AMA PRA Category 2 Credit™. These hours are self-reported by the physician to the American Medical Association and should include the activity title or description, subject or content area, date(s) of participation and number of credits claimed.
Once the preceptor hours are submitted through the online form, the physician will receive an email confirming their entry. This email can be used for reporting and documentation purposes. Physicians can submit their preceptor hours at cme.dmu.edu/preceptorCME and access their certificate and transcript with their DMU CME account.
