“Another Season Comes and Goes,” Part 3

Medical Humanities Society presents: Another Season Comes and Goes - Part 3

The Medical Humanities Society at Des Moines University presents its first annual online arts gallery, “Another Season Comes and Goes.” The gallery features art works and the written word by DMU students depicting seasons of human life and of the earth.

Gallery curators are Megan Kavanaugh, a second-year osteopathic medical student, and Megha Pokhriyal, a first-year osteopathic medical student. They are executive officers of the Medical Humanities Society.

Today we feature photos by Brooke Bachelor and Kenneth Kang, both second-year osteopathic medical students. Brooke, who is from Carol Stream, IL, and Kenneth, from Los Angeles, took these photos in Peru.

“I like to ‘get off the beaten path’ and capture the lives of the people in the countries I visit,” Kenneth says. Brooke says photography inspires her “because an immense amount of information can be contained within one image, and I like to present a lens through which audiences can view my world and the perspective of others.” She adds: “Looking at my own photographs allows me to reflect upon how certain life experiences have shaped my path and have undeniably defined the way in which I view and interact with the world. These photos keep me in touch with the depth of the human spirit and my other passions outside of medicine such as travel and music, and serve as a reminder of the importance of balancing school and our other passions, even as busy people. Our patients are multifaceted, and so are we!”

Brooke took the photo at left of a “confident boy in his beautiful, handwoven traditional dress” in the community surrounding Q’oya/Calca, Peru. “Each piece of clothing communicates some aspect of his family history/background,” she explains.

Brooke took the photo below of a community celebration while she was with a community health nurse in the same area of Peru.
