We think highly of Steve Morain, chair of the DMU Board of Trustees and an attorney with the Davis Brown Law Firm in Des Moines, and his wife, Erna Morain. Turns out so does the community: The couple were featured as the cover story for June 2018 issue of Westside Neighbors, and Erna was named the Waukee, IA, Citizen of the Year by Mayor Bill Pearod.
Erna has been heavily involved in her community for many years now—but hasn’t always resided in central Iowa. She moved to the United States in 1983 after a successful career as a commercial real estate developer in Holland. Steve and Erna married in 2004 and share five adult children and two grandsons.
The couple are avid travelers and have been to 25 countries. Along with traveling they both have a large aptitude for service and giving back to their community. Steve not only serves on the DMU board but also on the boards of the Iowa Insurance Hall of Fame and the Iowa Law School Foundation. Like Erna, he is heavily involved with the Des Moines Rotary. Erna is currently the assistant governor of Rotary District 6000 and will become the governor in 2019. This role is very special to Erna as she mentioned in the article that not many women are chosen for this position.
If that wasn’t enough to keep them busy, they also take pride in making health a priority in their lives. The two of them love to ski, swim, run, hike, walk and ride their bicycles. We are very proud to have Steve serve on our board here at the University and want to congratulate Erna on her great accomplishment.
