Melissa McGinnis, D.P.T.’18

Melissa McGinnis, D.P.T.’18, was recently certified to utilize the Eksoskeleton system, or EksoGT, in her work at UnityPoint Younker Rehabilitation in Des Moines. UnityPoint has the first and only such system in the state. According to UnityPoint, it uses an assistive technology to help patients with spinal cord injury or stroke get back on their feet. The patient wears the bionic suit to assist in the re-learning of correct step patterns, weight shifting and potentially modifying compensatory behaviors. The suit can also help patients with their digestive tract and circulation. The EksoGT was featured on KCCI-TV and WHO-TV in Des Moines.
