One Day for DMU Fuels a Great Future for Students

Students representing DMU’s three colleges, Madie Mealey, M.S.P.A.S.’24, Samantha Gantenbein, D.P.M.’25, and Ryan Lei, D.O.’25, competed in a spelling bee to win scholarship dollars for their college.

A record number of donors and dollars, a spelling bee and lots of purple-clad employees were part of Des Moines University’s best-ever One Day for DMU. This fifth consecutive annual event occurred this year from noon to noon April 19-20.

A record-high 326 alumni, employees and friends contributed $332,500 to support the University and its students. Many responded to matching gift challenges during the 24 hours provided by members of the Alumni Board of Directors, DMU President and CEO Angela L. Walker Franklin, Ph.D., and DMU’s three college deans.

“Thanks to the generosity of Des Moines University alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students, One Day for DMU was a tremendous success,” President Franklin says. “Whether our donors supported scholarships, our new campus, colleges and programs or one of DMU’s many other funds, their gifts will make a huge difference to our students and the future of the university.”

One Day participants included a record 75% of DMU faculty and staff. President Franklin noted it’s especially meaningful that the people who know DMU best choose to support it at such a high level.

“In their work, each of our employees enables us to fulfill our mission of educating tomorrow’s health professionals,” President Franklin says. “That so many also choose to contribute financially truly makes this university a special place.”

All One Day for DMU supporters have a powerful impact on DMU students and will fuel the priorities of the university’s Purple & Proud Campaign, currently under way:

  • Build and maintain the medical and health sciences university of the future with DMU’s new campus in West Des Moines
  • Support students by providing access to the finest education
  • Attract and invest in outstanding faculty by creating endowed positions and awards

The university is deeply grateful to all who participated in One Day for DMU. If you’d like to make a gift or learn more about Purple & Proud, visit campaign.dmu.edu.
