The Howard A. Graney Surgery Fund rewards exceptional students in the surgery discipline and supports excellence in education and advanced training to meet the needs of the 21st century.
Dr. Howard A. Graney trained in surgery and practiced at Des Moines General Hospital after graduating from the College of Osteopathic Medicine (Des Moines Still College of Osteopathy) in 1933. He helped to establish the surgery residency program at Des Moines General and was involved in training and mentoring many surgeons throughout his honorable career. The Howard A. Graney Surgery Fund was established in his honor in 1999 to enhance the education of students and residents preparing to enter surgical careers.
Awards sponsored by the Howard A. Graney Surgery Fund provides awards for demonstrated outstanding teaching and leadership in the surgical field. These include the Surgery Teaching Assistant Award and the Howard Graney Award for Outstanding Achievement in Surgery.

Surgery teaching assistant awards
The Howard A. Graney Surgery Fund provides award funding for the recognition of teaching assistants who exhibit advanced and outstanding commitment and skill performance in the teaching of the Basic Surgical and Medical Skills laboratory course during the previous academic year.
Howard Graney Award for Outstanding Achievement in Surgery
The Howard Graney Award for Outstanding Achievement in Surgery recognizes a graduating DMU medical student entering the field of surgery who has demonstrated exceptional performance in clinical practice, academics, leadership, and professionalism in surgery by meeting established criteria during the second, third and fourth years.
